General Objective

Using contemporary socio-cultural perspectives, students will learn the assessment cycle of documenting, analyzing and planning for children with an emphasis on assessment for learning. Communicating with families, the community and educators is an integral part of the cycle that allows access to multiple perspectives of children’s learning and development.  Various tools of assessment will be explored for students to understand and utilize appropriately in early childhood centres.

 

Learning outcomes

On completion of the module, students will be able to:

i.             compare the past and present (contemporary) practices of assessment in early childhood settings

ii.            utilize a range of appropriate observation and assessment methods across early childhood education and care settings

iii.           discuss when, why and how to assess young children to provide the appropriate learning experience at the right time

iv.           analyse the principles of assessment for young children

v.            use the skills of observations in their daily programme planning and practices at the childcare centres

vi.           design appropriate assessment plans for implementation across a range of early childhood education and care settings

vii.          connect indicators of the Bhutan Early Learning Developmental Standards while analysing observations of young children

viii.        examine ways of responding to assessment data and reporting to systems and families;

ix.           integrate appropriate and relevant assessment components as a part of everyday play activities in the early child care centre

x.            demonstrate feedback strategies and techniques
